RAF Aircraftman (£23,907 gross) takes home £19,872/year (£1,656/month) after income tax, NI and 4.5% AFPS 15 pension. Flight Lieutenant (£51,923): £39,134/year. Squadron Leader (£63,281): £45,552/year. All ranks include 14.5% X-Factor.
In addition to basic pay and the X-Factor, RAF personnel may receive specialist pays based on their role and qualifications. These are fully taxable and subject to NI.
All RAF personnel join the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015 (AFPS 15), a defined benefit career average (CARE) scheme. The 4.5% employee contribution is the lowest of any UK public sector pension scheme. The MOD contributes approximately 26%, making the total package worth substantially more than the gross salary figure suggests.
